Every one of us desire beautiful and healthy hair. What exactly is the meaning of beautiful hair? Is it that only long and thick hair is beautiful? Of course not! It is not just the length or the thickness that decides the health of our hair. Hair should be soft, shiny, clean, untangled and most important dandruff free. Dandruff is one of the main causes of unhealthy and dull looking hair. The word dandruff has been scaring us since so long. The ads that are displayed on the media about anti dandruff products have cashed on their products scaring the masses.

What is Dandruff?

Dandruff is natural flaking of scalp skin. The cells from the scalp die too fast and they are released from the scalp. Some people tend to have large amounts of dead skin or dandruff coming out of their scalp. This condition can also be accompanied with redness of skin and irritation. This needs to be taken care of immediately. Dandruff is not to your hair but it is to your scalp skin.

Common Causes of Dandruff

There are many reasons that contribute to this condition. This most common reason of causing dandruff is dry skin. Dandruff can be triggered in cold and dry winters and can be worse. Let us see below the main causes of dandruff:

Seborrheic dermatitis:

This is the most common cause of dandruff in many of us. It affects our scalp making it itchy, red and irritating. It is not a very serious disease but can be sometimes frustrating and can cause awkwardness when it is visible. Medication and proper care of scalp can reduce this condition.

Fungus (Malassezia):

This is also one of the common causes of dandruff commonly seen in healthy adults. This fungus or yeast along with other bacteria grows on our scalps oily discharge called sebum causing itchy and scaly skin. Antifungal or antibacterial lotions and creams help reduce the infections.

Dry skin:

Dry skin causes flakes which are discharged from the scalp. People with dry skin problem tend to develop dandruff problem more often. The condition often worsens in dry and extremely cold seasons. Regular oiling to the scalp can prevent dandruff formation.

Illnesses:

People who suffer from diseases like Parkinson’s disease or thyroid are much prone to causing dandruff. Prolonged illnesses reduce the immunity of the body causing dandruff and scaly scalp.

Use of non standard hair/skin care products:

Regular use of commercial non standard hair and skin care products damages the skin or the scalp. Use of shampoo too often causes dandruff and itchy, scaly and redness of the scalp. Use of some home remedies for dandruff can reduce the risk of allergies and keep the scalp healthy and dandruff free.

Diet:

Lack of proper nutrition looses the luster of our skin causing infections. Always consume foods that are rich in zinc, Vitamin B and the good fats. Walnuts are rich source of omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin E and biotin, which protects our cells from damage. Also consume foods which are rich in essential fatty acids like fish, avocado, pumpkin seeds etc.

Stress:

Living a stressful life leads to many disorders. We do not have time to look after ourselves in this stressful life. Lack of time to maintain the basic hygiene like washing hair and oiling the scalp regularly, triggers dandruff formation and damages the quality of hair and scalp.

Home remedies are always a better choice for dandruff treatment rather than the allopathic  medicines or costly lotions available in the market today. Our kitchen is full of medicinal stuff like herbs and condiments which are very useful in curing and preventing many diseases and infections.

Here are some of the simple home remedies for dandruff treatment:

Apply a mixture of warm coconut oil with a few drops of lime and leave it for an hour. Wash it with mild shampoo and warm water.

Mix yogurt with a few drops lime and apply it to the scalp. Leave it for one hour and wash it with warm water.

Applying tomato paste to the scalp reduces dandruff and soothes the scalp.

After shampooing your hair, apply a mixture of 2 tsp white vinegar with 6 tsp water. Repeat this at least once a week. This will keep the dandruff formation in control.

Aloe Vera gel when applied to the scalp and left for 30 minutes, gives you a cool and dandruff free scalp. Aloe vera has anti fungal and antibacterial properties. Repeat this at least twice or thrice a month to keep dandruff permanently.

Do not throw the peels of lemon they are very useful for scalp treatment. Boil some lemon peels in water. Apply this water after it cools down and wash it after an hour. Repeat this at least twice a week.

Baking soda is very useful for reducing dandruff. Apply baking soda briskly to wet hair and wash it without applying shampoo. Baking soda reduces the growth of fungus and leaves your hair oil and dandruff free.

Olive oil is supposed to be the best remedy for dandruff. Apply a little olive oil to the scalp and hair and massage it lightly. Cover your head and leave it overnight. Wash your hair with a shampoo that has olive oil formulation.

Coconut oil for Dandruff treatment

Dandruff is not a very serious disease, though it can cause discomfort and embarrassment. It can be controlled by taking proper care and maintaining basic hygiene. Proper dietary habits and complete sleep is also necessary for healthy scalp and hair. Healthy scalp has healthy hair so try to keep your scalp healthy to have beautiful and lustrous hair. Washing and massaging scalp regularly improves the circulation of blood. This also helps improve the memory and keeps our head cool.
